Guess who's giving me the eye right now because I won't give him thirds on Puppy Chow? Yep. That's right. Rocco. I'd planned on mixing in some of his regular food to get him accustomed to the change. Who knew he'd tear right in, scarf it up--twice--and beg for thirds?

The good news is this brand is half what I was paying for the pricy, no-allergens dog food. In fact, I've never fed any of my dogs this well known new-to-my-home brand (perhaps not new to him--was this what he was getting at the Humane Society?). But, he'd been turning up his nose at his expensive dry food lately until  convinced he'd get no further choices and then devour it because of holding out past his meal time. Rocco was talking to me again and I wasn't listening. I'm listening now, buddy. A search on his usual dog food showed complaints about a changed formula, dropping the rating to one star on one site but a 98% rating on another site. What to believe????

The bad news is, after opening the Purina bag and spotting the food-dyed pieces I didn't know were in there,  now I'm wondering if this dog food is akin to doggie junk food. Won't kill him, but is it really good for him? Another project to research. After a cursory look, Purina isn't listing ingredients, just promises a shiny coat and a happy dog at Purina Dog Chow Site Claims. All of the supposedly independent raters that I've looked at, give it one star. Here's one at TheDogFoodAdvisor. They claim: an unbiased review by the editors of The Dog Food Advisor, 2009. Clearly I have more work to do.

In the meantime, I'll feed him what he'll eat and continue my research. He's happy and eating. Can't be all bad :)
